Question:
My problem is poor quality soil, this is common knowlage according to elderly gardeners in my comunity. I have chicken manure at my disposal, what benefits, or disadvantages would adding this to the soil have.
Answer:
Chicken manure is high in nitrogen and is therefore great for plants' foliage. It is usually bought as pellets which should be sprinkled around the base of each plant as a feed.
It can also be used as a lawn feed either mixed with water and applied with a watering can or sprinkled evenly on the lawn and then watered in well. Don't overdo the measures as its strong stuff.
I am assuming that the chicken manure you have access too is fresh. If so it must be composted before adding it to the garden otherwise, it will burn any plants it comes in contact with. You could either set up a separate area to store it until it composts down or add it fresh to your existing compost heap.
This will produce a wonderfully rich manure to dig into your soil or use it as a mulch on top of the soil each autumn.
