Planting Wisteria

Question:

Is it o.k. to plant a wisteria in a raised bed (concrete blocks) dimensions 5foot x3 foot x18 inches high?

Answer:

Has the raised bed got a base or will it be free to root into the soil?

If it has a base then the roots will remain restricted and the plant will stay reasonably small. As long as it is kept well watered and mulched in the autumn it will probably do well but will never reach the size of those grown in the ground.

If the raised bed has no base then the plant will effectively be growing in the ground and could, eventually outgrow the bed. You will have to keep it in check with hard pruning, but as this helps flowering then it’s not a bad thing.

Just a note: Wisteria take quite a number of years to flower, it is best to buy an older specimen you know to have flowered previously. If this is not possible, just be patient as it could be a while. Pruning is correctly will help. Click here for our article about how to prune wisteria.
